Essential Oils are volatile aromatic compounds that are found in seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of the plant. They play key roles in reproductive, protective, and regenerative purposes.

When you first open a bottle of essential oil, you instantly notice that the aroma is potent and you can smell it typically even from some distance. The physical and chemical properties of the volatile aromatic compounds that compose essential oils allow them to quickly move through the air and directly interact with the olfactory sensors in the nose.

Such unique properties make essential oils ideal for applications inclusion in aromatherapy – using these compounds from plants to help maintain a healthy mind and body – as well as other applications. The type of volatile aromatic compounds present in an essential oil determines both the oil’s aroma and the benefits it offers.

There are three main ways to use essential oils

Aromatic: This is one of the easiest and most popular ways to use essential oils.

Our sense of smell can evoke powerful physiologic, mental and emotional responses and essential oils have a powerful effect via aromatic use. I love diffusing as it is a simple and quick way to get the benefits from your oils. Are you looking for a way to relax your mood? Provide some respiratory support? Or promote a restful night’s sleep? Then grab your diffuser, place a few drops of your favourite essential oils in the water and you are good to go.

A few ways to use your essential oils aromatically:

  • Apply some oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your car.
  • Mix a few drops of oil with water in a glass spray bottle and mist around your home.
  • Place 1-2 drops of Peppermint in the palms of your hands, rub together and cup your hands over your nose and inhaling deeply a few times.

Topical: Topical application is one of the fastest and simplest ways to experience the benefits of essential oils for the body.

In addition to having targeted benefits, many forms of topical application can provide overall support for the entire body. Diluting essential oils with a carrier, like Fractionated Coconut Oil, makes for better absorption into the skin which extends the benefits for even longer. Using a carrier oil also helps with any skin sensitivity, which is very important when using oils on your children and anyone with skin sensitivity.

Some ideas for topical applications are:

  • Abdomen: Apply oils to the abdomen to experience soothing and calming benefits, especially for occasional digestive discomfort.
  • Chest: Help promote feelings of clear breathing when oils are applied to the chest. This is also a bonus for getting the aromatic benefits from oils while breathing in the aroma.
  • Bottom of the Feet: The bottoms of the feet are an ideal place to apply essential oils because the feet have large pores that can readily absorb the oils. When using essential oils for the first time on yourself or your children, the bottoms of the feet are a good place to start because the skin is very thought and less prone to skin sensitivity.

Essential Oil Safety: Please do not get essential oils in your eyes, up your nose or in your ear canal. If you ever have any oils that are uncomfortable on your skin, please use a carrier oil to dilute it out. NOT WATER! Water will actually drive the oil into the skin further. Pour the carrier oil into the area and continue to wipe out until the skin sensitivity stops.

Food Additive: One of the most common reasons for adding essential oils to your food is to reap the amazing benefits. I only trust using dōTERRA essential oils when using them as a food additive as each bottle holds our CPTG standard.

I personally like to have a drop or two of Lemon essential oil in my water as a gentle detox for my body to start my day right. When drinking essential oils, please make sure you use a glass or stainless steel drink bottle as true pure essential oils can start to break down the chemicals in plastic.

All three methods allow us to experience essential oils with not only supporting our health and wellness and that of our families but also our emotional and cellular health too. Please do not take this information that all essential oils are created equally and can be used the same way. Some may contain fillers, preservatives or impurities which lower the quality of the oil and make it unsafe for food additive and topical use.

dōTERRA provides the most tested, and most trusted essential oils on the market through careful sourcing and production. They are committed to providing the purest, most potent essential oils available. As a mum, this is super important to me as I wanted to turn to essentials oils to care for my children’s health.

There are two major factors that play a role in the effectiveness and quality of essential oils.

Plant Potency

When selecting which plants are to be used for essential oil production, it is important that the plant is grown in the correct soil, temperature, and climate. When these factors are optimal, the plant will be able to reach its highest potency. One of the defining differences between dōTERRA and any other company is the fact that dōTERRA sources their oils from all over the world, wherever that plant grows best.

Oil Purity

When oils contain fillers or other elements that dilute and alter their purity, their ability to function at their highest capacity is compromised. In order to enjoy all of the benefits of essential oils, they must be used in their purest form.

Every single batch of dōTERRA essential oil is put through a seven-step, third-party testing, to ensure every single bottle of oil that is purchased is 100% pure essential oil. Again, tracing back to the fact that I wanted to use these oils on my kids: there needed to be clear-cut, unbiased testing done to ensure that the oils were not only pure but that they held the therapeutic properties that I was looking for.

Did you know there is no governing agency over essential oils? Many of these bottles that claim to be “100% pure oil” are actually very poor quality and/or highly diluted/adulterated. This is why dōTERRA has set the bar for essential oil purity and potency. Since there is no governing source over the purity of essential oils, this is where dōTERRA created our Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade testing. Our CPTG exceeds industry standards.
